November 2005 - Kim Dailey

Kim Dailey from Dixfield put on a highly informative demonstration on pen turning for this month’s meeting. Kim’s just one of many our of members who happen who hold dual citizenship. He not only belongs to our chapter - The Maine Woodturners - but he’s also the founder and president of the Western Mountain Woodturners chapter over in Dixfield.

Kim’s demo was part of the new Presidential Exchange Program. Last week our pres - Mark Irving - was in Dixfield putting on a rolling pin demo. Of course, I’m guessing that Mark was really demo’ing just to check out their new Powermatic 3520.

On behalf of both chapters - “Thanks guys!”

Before the demo got underway Kim spent a few moments to apologize in advance for anything he forgets to discuss during the demo.

Kim pre-drills his pen blanks at the drill press using a special clamping device that keeps the blank squared to the table.

These are the Barrel Trimmers he uses to ensure the end grain of the blank is perpendicular to the hole he’s just drilled.

The one on the right also cleans out the inside of the inserted tube.

The top and bottom blanks are now mounted on the mandrel in correct relationship to each other and Kim is ready to do his thing.

He uses a 3/4” roughing gouge to make quick work of getting the square stock round.

Kim maintains precise control of the gouge

Didn’t take too long at all.

He sands the turned stock with micromesh “sandpaper”.
