The Three Amigos treat the club to an evening of bowl bottoms
Mark Irving starts it off by explaining the fabrication and use of his Compression Chuck.
And he then demonstrates some efficient slight-of-hand manipulation with a traditional jamb chuck
Here’s Mark removing the last remnants of the bowl’s original tenon with a power carver.
Then Tom Raymond took over and pointed out which part of the bowl is the bottom!
Tom also used a jamb chuck to secure the piece which left Mark wondering why Tom’s was better than his.
To remove the nub Tom used a shallow fluted carving gouge and a mallet. A couple of good whacks and he was done.
Then incoming president Peter McCrea began his portion of the demo by showing how to get the bowl perfectly centered in a jamb chuck with a dial indicator mounted on a magnetic base.
Nice chunk of wood!
Peter used a shallow fluted detail gouge and a box scraper tool rest to quickly remove the tenon with a simple friction and rubbing technique.
Here’s his detail gouge
And for his finale, Peter converted the club’s 2436 into an 800 pound power sander.
