Member Ken Keoughan took us on a slide show presentation of how he produces his“Tall Elegant Vessels”
Click here to download the handout Ken wrote to describe his process.
Note - most of the images on this page were captured from the video shot by Dennis Curtis.
Thanks Dennis!
Ken passes around one of his signature pieces
He talked about the difficulty in achieving narrow stems and wide flaring tops
He said that this piece was awaiting approval
Ken sketches each piece to develop a dimensioned design prior to actual production so that nothing is left to chance
The sketches serve as a guide and reminder on how to achieve various different elements
Here’s a shot of Ken stressing the importance of an important point
All turning for tonight’s demo was done in advance, but Ken brought along some slides to prove that he does actually use his lathe from time to time
Getting the main body prepped for hollowing
He does turn afterall!
Prepping the stem
The many components of his tall multi-species stems
A nearly completed piece
Thanks, Ken!
Rick Palm doesn’t quite believe what Katharina Keoughan has to say
A rapt audience
A break in the action
More discussion on form
Ken often finishes his pieces with flat black paint so that he can study the resultant form without being distracted by the figure in the wood.
Now that is tall.
And elegant, too
