January 2005 - Dave Lancaster

During our January and February meetings this year we were blessed by back to back demos by chapter founder and past president David Lancaster on his specialty - Twice Turned Bowls. In January he started out with blank preparation and went on to discuss faceplate mounting. He then rough turned the outside of a gorgeous 24” cherry bowl blank and finished up with a session on coring techniques.

Between meetings the bowl was dried in his kiln and then in February we saw him do the finish turning.

A rapt audience watches as Dave begins to remove the pith from this chunk of cherry with an electric chain saw.

Dave said that getting a good bowl begins right here. Carefully placed cuts ensure minimal warpage later on.

For an electric saw, this one cut pretty well. Notice the layout lines Dave marked on the log prior to cutting.

0302

An old chunk of plywood of a known diameter is all he needs to find the center point.

It’s perfectly acceptable to save wear & tear on your body (and the clock) by knocking off the corners in advance.

We’re good to go.

He’s got the blank mounted on the headstock with a faceplate.

That’s a homemade curved toolrest he’s about to set.

Dave says, “If a spindle turner would never consider using a curved toolrest, why should a bowl turner contemplate using a straight one?”

Long even sweeps in a consistent arc are what makes Dave’s bowls stand out.

Dave bears down with an Irish Grind.

Look at the size of that shaving!

A bit of finesse work near the rim.

Working to get that curve just right.

Wood is too precious to waste, so Dave cores out two extra smaller bowls from the original blank.

12

A bit of set up adjustment between corings takes just a minute.

That’s all we have time for this month. Check the February 2005 gallery for the continuation.

Dave, you’re gonna have to speak to that new guy.

He’s the only one not paying attention.
