Jacques Vesery took us on a highly informative and most entertaining powerpoint presentation on the elements of good design. This included an in depth analysis of his work (even the bad stuff, as if that were possible!) and that of other established turners on the national scene. Art aint easy. Thanks, Jacques. The session was most helpful.

Gary Rowland came down from Jay to present his methods for producing open segmented forms. The meticulous preparation and attention to detail required of this turning style is extreme. But so are the results. Well done, Gary!
The Tee Shirt Contest has come to an end. Appreciation goes out to all participants and congrats to our two winners - Jacques Vesery and an anonymous long lost member.

Another McCrea inspired first for the club (at least as far as I know) took place tonight as we were treated to fifteen separate mini-demos by ten different members. It ran the full gamut of topics, too - from alternative mounting methods and drying methods to tool making and mini-mini-mini lathes and on to design layout and tool leverage. Well done to all.

A monthly meeting of a different sort this time. We met at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship’s Messler Gallery where member Jacques Vessery gave an inspiring talk on the emergence of woodturning as an art form over the last sixty years. It included observations on submitted pieces from such luminaries as Stocksdale, Osolnik, Stirt, Burchard, Jordan, Scarpino, and Ellsworth (plus many more).

The return from our summer hiatus was made even more special by a fabulous day spent with Ashland, Oregon’s Christian Burchard. His laid back approach to turning without benefit of fancy chucks or other gear was highlighted with a demonstration of his madrone baskets and a sphere. He also treated us to a supportive approach to critiquing pieces that left all parties enriched and encouraged. Thanks, Christian!

Chapter VP (and webguy) Andy Hoyt terrified the evening’s attendees with the turning of a winged bowl from a dry block of cherry. While no one was injured during the demo, there was at least one moment when the subject of Line of Fire was quickly debated, defined, and evacuated. He (me, myself, and I) then went on to lead the group in a discussion of the evenings remarkable Show & Tell pieces.
We also learned tonight that our website was awarded first place in the annual AAW Website Competition. Yes, I’m honored by the distinction, but equal praise must go to the membership for their ongoing valuable participation in club activities which has made the development of the site both easy and fun for me. Thanks, folks.

A special night for sure. A David Lancaster night to be exact. We were treated to an entertaining and informative session on sharpening just about everything and anything. Thanks, Dave!
