Giant Ambrosia beetle/red maple

First place winner in the AAW Summer 2007 Off Center Platter Contest

The carved, polychromed rim is a pun - a representation of the beetle that gives the ambrosia maple that the bowl is turned from its characteristic streaks.

When I first turned the top, I left wood above the level of the bowl and rim, so I could carve the beetle and other parts of the design in relatively high relief.
