April 2006 - Tool Making

Here’s a hook tool that Alan Lacer made for us last fall during his demo.

This is what we were hoping to recreate for our tool making session.

Ken Shepherd starts the process by grinding a flat on both sides of the tool stock.

Peter McCrea lends a hand with the grinding. This part of process took the most time.

Nothing like working steel with woodworking tools!

Ken and Burt Truman double team things during the next step which was to fine tune the grinding.

Worked like a charm after Burt fixed that cussed plug once and for all.

More double teaming as Ron Kostron and Paul Toomey heat the tip in preparation for bending the hook shape.

Bob Hackett worked so fast at the polisher that it was really difficult to get a decent shot of him doing his thing.

But then Dennis Curtis jumped in and slowed him down long enough to get a slightly better shot.

Very slightly.

Ron and Mark Irving are grinding an edge on new tool.

Without his video camera to moose around with, Burt wasn’t quite sure what to do. But at least he’s standing in the right spot.

Sheila Wiken gets in some quality turning time with a skew and Al Mather coaches her on technique.

Meanwhile Dennis Curtis and Ken Keoughan coach Al on his coaching technique.

Douglas Blasius also got some up close and personal coaching from Al.

First time ever on a lathe; and with a skew no less!

Way to go,

Douglas!
