April 2004 - Mike Chase

Member Mike Chase chose to haul his own General Mini lathe down from Farmington for his first demo in front of the club. Looks pretty good sitting there flanked by the two Oneways

Mike’s focus is on turning between centers and likes to produce goblets, bottle stoppers, rattles, and such.

A predominant feature of all his work is the presence of captured rings. And occasionally he turns something with two that are intertwined.

Some quick cutting shown here with a skew to begin the formation of a bead.

Fast forward to the point after the ring has been freed from the goblet, and we see Mike applying some friction polish to the bead.

Then he uses (what looks like) a 1/4” parting tool to quickly remove some more material near the ring.

And some more.

Oops. Now he’s moved onto something else

To be honest I can’t tell what it is, yet.

This guy is serious about personal safety. Faceshield, glove, and dust collection. Guess he wants to live longer than some.

Looks like he’s sanding some coves and beads.

And it looks like his audience enjoys his technique.

Ahem! Peter.....
